Unfamiliar Vestige
Video projection, framed photograph, unframed photograph.
Hutsebout grew up seeing this framed photograph of himself with his grandfather, but had no memory of the experience itself nor where it took place. After moving into his grandparents’ house as an adult, he discovered a second, unframed photo tucked away in a drawer that allowed him to identify the location of the scene. In the film shot from that same place decades later, the child has become the one behind the camera. Like time, the river remains a constant but is perpetually moving, impossible to reverse. Hutsebout regards this fact as an opening, noting that “as much as I reflect on the memories I carry, I’m just as intrigued by the ones I forget.”
