Passing Resemblance
After his father’s death, Hutsebout felt the need to mourn “through somatic processes, using elements that connected me directly to place and family.” For this performance, he excavated 175 pounds–his own body weight–of soil from his grandparents’ garden and hauled it to nearby train tracks using a drop cloth found in the garage. He repurposed the handle of an antique scythe, a tool associated with the Grim Reaper, to serve as a yoke. Hutsebout intended to return with the dirt to the house, but the hole created by dragging the cloth rendered that impossible. This unplanned development produced what he described as an “unexpected release” of both physical and emotional weight.
